Tournament off due to numbers

LET DOWN: Colac Lawn Tennis Club president Mark Robinson, right, is disappointed aspiring district tennis players like 14-year-old Beth O’Brien, left, will miss out on Colac’s tournament in the Optus Junior Points Tour, after the club was forced to cancel the event this week.

Dwindling player numbers have forced tennis officials to call off Colac’s biggest junior tournament.

After months of planning, Colac Lawn Tennis Club cancelled the Optus Junior Points Tournament this week after receiving less than 50 per cent of the entry numbers it had last year.

Just 35 young players registered to compete in the event, which has attracted players nation-wide in its four-year history.

The tournament attracted 75 players last year.

Club president Mark Robinson said it was not a decision the committee had made lightly, but it was necessary.

“It is disappointing, in a number of ways, the most important thing is you get players to create an atmosphere and you just don’t have that with small numbers,” he said.
