Fire destroys Winchelsea district house

FIRE has destroyed a home at Ombersly, north-west of Winchelsea.

The fire ripped through the weatherboard home at the Mt Hesse Estate on Mt Hesse Estate Road on Saturday, causing an estimated $350,000 worth of damage.

Wingeel Country Fire Authority brigade captain Alistair McIntyre said “the fire had well and truly taken hold” when he arrived at 3.10pm.

Mr McIntyre said the suspected cause was a log fire in the lounge room.

It took private crews and CFA crews from Beeac, Inverleigh, Winchelsea and Wingeel around 30 minutes to control the blaze.

Mr McIntyre said the house’s occupant went to the Winchelsea Hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation, but the occupant’s cat died.

Meanwhile, police at Lorne are appealing for witnesses after a spate of car vandalisms.

Leading Senior Constable Colin Paton said vandals debadged 20 cars parked at Lorne’s Mantra resort, while other cars had their mirrors smashed and stolen.
