Inquiry into district drug use and crime

Drugs and Crime Prevention Committee chairman Simon Ramsay of Birregurra

A STATE Government inquiry will examine ways to curb drug use and crime in Colac and district.

The Inquiry into Locally Based Approaches to Community Safety and Crime Prevention will examine how community safety programs around the state manage drug and crime in their areas.

Drugs and Crime Prevention Committee chairman Simon Ramsay of Birregurra said the committee would target larger regional cities before moving to smaller regional centres, such as Colac.

“I think there has been sufficient evidence to say there are drugs and there is crime in Colac as there is in other small towns,” he said.

Mr Ramsay, who is also a Liberal Member for Western Victoria, said the committee would examine what community programs were available and their potential for improvement.

He said the committee would was calling for public submissions from interest groups about how to improve management.

The deadline for submissions is May 30.

“This is all about prevention, so we’re looking at programs to prevent drug use and crime,” Mr Ramsay said.

“We’re looking at communities how they can try and shoulder some of the responsibility,” he said.
