A COLAC district junior tennis squad will aim for back-to-back titles at a regional tournament.
The team of 32 players – ranging from 12-and-under to 18-and-under – will travel to Bendigo Tennis Centre on Sunday for round one of the Victoria Country Tennis Association’s Southern Squad Trophy.
Coach Len Davis said the team hoped to mirror its success of last year, when it defeated Buninyong by 54 points.
“It’s a new squad, we’ve got a lot of young players but we’ve also got some talented mature players like Molly Ennor, James Parish and Lewis O’Brien,” he said.
“We’re quietly happy with the squad, but this year there’ll be a team from Bendigo which will be a big test – Bendigo’s a big town.”
Colac Lawn Tennis Club veterans Mark Robinson, Jason Murnane and Cassandra Smith also helped train the side with Davis, who is in his 16th year as coach.
Ennor and Parish will captain the squad, which officials selected from an initial group of 40 young players in March.
“Molly and James lead by example, they show good leadership, and they know that’s important when representing Colac,” Davis said.
“It’s not just for Lawn Tennis Club members either, James plays in the Polwarth competition, but it’s an opportunity for all district kids to play together and represent the district,” he said.
After Sunday, competitors will return to Bendigo on August 21 for round two of competition.
Successful teams then progress to a masters event in November against winners from the Northern Squad Trophy.
