Well done to the Colac Otway Shire Councillors for releasing information on Councils VCAT legal costs. Being prepared to be accountable is one of the hallmarks of an open an honest democratic process – we are lucky to have a group of local politicans that are prepared to be this open. Well done too to the Colac Herald for reporting it, however why is it that another newspaper ran a much more detailed story on this local issue? For instance, the other article 27/2/2012 mentioned that Colac Otway Shire also employed a specific worker to deal with the VCAT cases. This significantly amplifies the total costs to Council of the VCAT cases (what seems to have been reported in the Colac Herald is just the actual money spend on a legal practioner). It would be great to see our local paper asking a few harder questions – they make for interesting reading too!
