THREE Colac and district footballers have gained selection to represent a Hampden region squad that will take on the state.
Alvie’s Ben McCarthy, Colac Imperials’ Taylor Henry and Colac Tiger Dominic Dare will play in the V-Line Cup, an under-15 schoolboys championship in Melbourne.
The three-day round-robin style competition with more than 500 competitors across four divisions is the elite under-15 Victorian Country Football League championship for the top junior players.
Cobden led the way with six players in the 25-player squad – Louis Robertson, Paul Pekin, Nick Kemp, Nathan Stevens, Jack Hutt and Jake Reed while Nathan Gronbeck was Camperdown’s sole representative.
Colac’s three representatives is down for nine the past two years, but squad development manager Alan Thompson said other clubs had stepped up this season.
“Colac has always been a strong contributor to the list over the years but it rotates,” he said.
“This year Cobden provided a lot of our players this year which is exciting, exciting that it’s not just the two major areas in Colac and Warrnambool providing players.”
Players will attend a jumper presentation at Cobden following training on Wednesday night, as they prepare for their first game against Frankston Peninsula on April 1.
“This year we’re probably not as tall but our onballers are very talented,” Thompson said.
“We might lack height in key positions but we’ll certainly have the quality around the ball around the ground to provide us with a winning score,” he said.
