That’s exactly the reaction I thought I’d get. So much for facts and figures making a difference. It is a well known fact that the kangaroo population, in particular Eastern & Western greys, have well exceeded the population this country had at the time of settlement. Why don’t all you so called conservationists concentrate on the animals that really need to be “managed” such as the Bilby or better still, the rare species recently found in the area thought to be extinct! (sorry, he name of it escapes me at the moment) Kangaroos will be here as long as there are people here. For goodness sakes, they are even becoming like Australia’s native livestock! Go to your local Coles or Woolies and see how readily available Kangaroo Burgers, Steaks or Mince is! And you’re concerned about a few that need managing?? Get a life!! And just for the record, I do support managing rare species. But culling a few Kangaroos just isn’t going to make much impact toward threatening their species one bit.
It saddens me Ex-Colacian that you again call people who have a differing view from you names and put them down. That is not an argument and again you provide no proof for your statements. You need to look at the bigger picture. The reason animals like the Bilby are now on the endangered or extinct list are all as a result of people or their actions. They did not look at the bigger picture while the animals were in large numbers and now we have to learn from the past to not repeat it.
where there culling these poor kangaroos is in a reserve that means reserve a safe haven and no shooters should be there it ‘s uncalled for and cruel the kangaroo don’t destroy any vegetation it’s man and other wild animals but not the kangaroos they are icon and soon there will be none they will all be extinct so stop this animal cruelty now.
To ‘ex-Colacian’; It is an urban myth that kangaroo populations are ‘exploding’ or in ‘plague proportions’. It is no more than pub yarns spun by those with a vested interest in the slaughter. The only thing we have ‘given’ the kangaroos is death and suffering. These animals were here long before we know-it-all white people arrived. They didn’t need ‘managing’ then and they don’t need it now. In the 270 odd years we’ve been on this land we have ‘managed’ over 38% of Australia’s wildlife to extinction. Kangaroos have to contend with speeding vehicles, yobbos with guns, floods, disease, drought, loss of habitat due to badly planned urban and industrial sprawl, dogs, foxes, morons with bows & arrows, and plain sadists who do unspeakable things to them. It’s time we stopped our interfering and trying to bully all other species into submission. Humans are the overpopulated ones and a virus on this planet, in every way.
The people with knee-yerk reactions are those who automatically talk about an over population of kangaroos whenever they see one on the road. There are many other reasons why wildlife can be found on or beside the road. The way drainage is constructed on our roads, the grass is always somewhat greener and lusher than what is in the bush, thus attracting our wildlife, especially in times of drought. This may give the allusion of a population explosion just because people normally don’t see wildlife here, but they may infact be struggling to survive. Another reason could be that the road has cut through the kangaroos normal route to feeding grounds or the kangaroos original habitat has been destroyed by bushfire or human expansion(as is the case in Canberra).
To those who believe people who care for wildlife do not have any facts, I suggest you contact us directly. As wildlife carers and rescuers we have a wealth of studies and own experiences to support our arguments and we are more than willing to share them and listen to your own supporting arguments. A newspaper article cannot possibly include all of our information especially the gruesome photos of the latest Canberra cull showing how inhumanely our kangaroos and joeys were slaughtered.
We have given kangaroos an environment that is better than when the first fleet arrived. This is why their numbers are exploding and why they have a need to cull them. The green movement have once again made the only movement they seem to know..knee-jerk. Rather than doing some research and study of numbers and various other factors regarding kangaroos, they instead have just taken the “don’t kill our native wildlife” stance regardless of how much their population has exploded compared to many years ago. They are now in such populous numbers that they pose a risk to not only themselves but road-users as well. Better to be culled in control than by a car and potentially take the life of a loved one.
@Ex-Colacian. you said “We have given kangaroos an environment that is better than when the first fleet arrived” This is such a predicable comment from people who know little about this land and is absolutely untrue, the Australian land has been decimated by European farming. Almost all the native grasses upon which Macropods fed have been replaced by pasture grass which are totally unsuitable for the animals, the soil and the seasons. There is no scientific evidence that Macropod numbers have exploded since the arrival of the white man, to the contrary, their numbers prior to settlement have been estimated at 200 million, today a generous estimate would be 50 million.
There is nothing more arrogant than a civilization which moves into a country, puts up fences, brings in non native animals and then expects the natives and animals of the country to conform to their culture.
Cienwen, you are quoted as saying, “This is such a predicable comment from people who know little about this land and is absolutely untrue.”
Don’t make such outrageous claims to someone you don’t even know Cienwen. I do know that the Aboriginals have been “managing” Kangaroo numbers Australia wide for longer than we have been in this country. And you clearly do not have much of a grasp on what is really going on in your own country either. I suppose next you’re going to try and tell me that bushfires are a bad thing for the Australian bush?? PLEASE!! 😐
Thank goodness for fantastic caring people like Ron Anstis. A wonderful person who takes time to care for our precious Kangaroos as well as standing up for their plight . I wish there were more people who care for other things apart from themselves.
