Appreciate Jo’s comments. However it is important to have an “appropriate” amount spent on creating a festive spirit. The “Spirit of Christmas Committee” lights could be checked and put up for very little cost. Cost effective banners ( reused each year ) would also be a possibility. As to the community lunch this too could be done for not a lot of cost IF THERE IS A WILL to achieve this. What WILL be happening in the next week is the “launch” of he 2012 Christmas Lights Competition. This completion will have 6 categories this year “Best Residential”, “Most Unique Residential”, “Best Nativity Scene”, Best Business Day”, & “Best Business Night”. A “NEWS FLASH” is that for this year there will be a new category “Best Rural” display. Entry is free ( via entry form ) and first prize will be $200 in each category. We had exceptional entries for the past two years and have really appreciated the assistance of the Colac Herald & other sponsors.
I would prefer the money wasted on new decorations be spent to help out families that will struggle over christmas – what about a free community lunch for pensioners and families? A big bbq in the park with free activities for the kids. There’s real Christmas spirit.
Lights and decorations are a gigantic waste of money. If the traders want more decorations, they should pay for them themselves. Rates are high enough as it is without money being wasted on trivia.
