Thanks for your response Chris, im pleased to see that someone is happy to put the truth out there. 🙂
I guess we can use the info against those who voted in that ‘LOGO’, we don’t pay their wage & allowances for them to decide on things we don’t want…
Keep the truth coming Cr Chris and you’ll get my vote.
First Juggy the hours vary greatly for each Councillor. Some I doubt would do an average of ten hours a week. I usually do between 25 to 40 depending on when committee meetings fall. The Mayors time varies greatly as to the mayor but the work rate has certainly deminishekd in recent years. Jo I will put up the actual figures when I get a chance but here is an example. Year 1 (2009) $20k …..year 2 $20500 ….. Year 3 $21000 …..year 4 $21500 so now we supposedly take a cut year 1 (2012) $ 21480 ….. Year 2 $ 21980 …… Year 3 $ 23480…… Year 4 $ 23980.
Some things to remember current allowance stays in place to May THEN the automatic increase happens in September or October so even for 2012 councillor will get more. The actual increase is not $500 but about a 2.5 % increase, which is more like $550 ( mayor $1700 ) Also there is the 9% superannuation that councillors have the unique option of taking as cash. This all adds up to about $ 3000 EXTRA per councillor and $7000 extra for the ‘Mayor a total of about $25000 extra for this term of Council. Remember also this is an allowance not a wage. Also it is totally paid for by the Ratepayer.
Then there is the seperate issue of the OTHER allowances these add up to around $0.5 MILLION. That’s a whole other issue in itself. !!!!!!!!!
so what are the actual figures Chris?
Can’t help thinking that a real pay cut could have given someone a part-time job.
What sort of hours do councillors actually put in??? It sounds like a good wicket for a 2nd job. When I wad 1st working at the Ab’s nearly 20yr ago I was doing heavy labouring for half that of a Cr.
Maybe I should study up on politics and run for council myself sometime. 😉
The reality is there has not been a cut in real terms at all but in fact a rise. The amount Councillors will receive in this new term of Council will rise to well in excess of the already $1 million that goes directly to Councillors. I moved that it be cut to $12k (cr) & $36k (mayor) but wasn’t seconded. I then moved 15 & 45, at least Cr Delahunty seconded that before it was defeated 5:2. Changes brought in 4 years ago see increases happen each year as well as 9% super added ( unusually Crs can take this a cash payment). Council has done a very good “spin” job.
