Colac Swimming Club members will be without a pool during work at Colac’s Bluewater Fitness Centre.

COLAC Swimming Club will be without a pool while a Colac fitness centre undergoes redevelopment.

Bluewater Fitness Centre, in Hearn Street, will close its pool in September when it starts work on a $10-million redevelopment.

The centre’s existing 25-metre pool will be unavailable while contractors install new features including a warm-water pool, splash pad and bigger changerooms.

Colac Swimming Club officials are considering training alternatives including organising transport to surrounding towns that feature pools including Camperdown, Winchelsea and Geelong.

Colac Otway Shire Council’s recreation, arts and culture manager Ian Seuren said the council was discussing viable alternatives with the swimming club.

“We are working with, and will continue to work with the Colac Swimming Club to minimise the impact any pool closures will have on their club activities,” he said.

“Council acknowledges that unfortunately, there will be some short-term impost on the club and other centre users; however the project will result in a fantastic redeveloped facility.”

Officials have told the Colac Herald they expect the redevelopment to take at least 12 months.

Mr Seuren said the new Bluewater facilities would help the club in the long term.

“We anticipate that the new facility will encourage greater participation in Learn to Swim programs, which will no doubt have a flow-on effect for the swimming club with opportunities to then grow their membership longer term.”

The existing 25-metre pool at Bluewater Fitness Centre will remain unchanged.
