Hospital chief defends bed plan

Colac Area Health chief Geoff Iles says the hospital has closed an overnight urgent care service to cover government funding cuts.

COLAC’S available emergency hospital beds will halve after 3.30pm each day under a plan to retain the city’s overnight urgent care.

  2. In my view the article needs a bit more….the article leaves me with questions that the public should have answered –

    How did Mr Isles calculate how many beds were utilised? Did he take into account how long each patient stayed in the Emergency Dept and not simply be an average of patients over the shift duration? Please explain so it makes sense.

    How does this “model” contribute to the saving of money? Previously, there were supposed to be 7 nurses per day (3 on AM, 3 on PM and 1 on night shift)….and CAH couldn’t get that right – still can’t. The “new model” also has 7 nurses required per day, but with night shifts being 10 hours per shift, this equates to an additional 14 nursing hours per week and an extra person per day receiving the night shift allowance? Your story doesn’t make sense, Mr Isles, and this is another example of why you can’t be trusted.
