At a gym in Ballarat, iron clanged and a crowd roared encouragement as Colac’s Grace McKenzie stood over a bar loaded with 182.5 kilograms. A deep breath. A grip. A lift.

That final deadlift didn’t just complete the trio of events at the Stronghold Services Tribute over Anzac weekend-it completed a personal goal more than a year in the making: an accumulated 400-kilogram total in a single event.

For McKenzie, a mother of two and relatively new to the sport, the lift meant more than just numbers. It meant validation, momentum, and possibly a golden ticket to the national stage.

More future carpenters, mechanics and manufacturers are set to complete their qualifications in Colac following a TAFE shake-up, officials say.

South West TAFE says it will expand options through the Colac Trade Training Centre as it officially launched at the facility, which is based at the Colac Secondary College.

South West is taking over from The Gordon, and Minister for Skills and TAFE Gayle Tierney said there had already been a “massive increase in the number of enrolments”.

A popular Colac couple are one step closer to being allowed to stay in the community, with a federal court ordering a review of their temporary work visa applications.

Mango and Pam of Colac’s Mango Thai restaurant have been locked in an immigration battle for years after their initial request for temporary work visas was refused.

The Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia released its decision on Thursday, determining that a “jurisdictional error” had occurred during the previous decision handed down on February 6, 2020, by an appeals tribunal.
