COLAC district libraries are facing another tough 12 months, with a shortage of cash contributing to a lack of new books.

Given that the Colac Otway Shire Council paid $1.3 Million just to enter the Joint Use School Library agreement and now has to pay 50% of all ongoing costs ( Electricity , Insurance, Maintenance) for the Library / Principal’s office / Staff rooms / student toilets / Lecture theater and more I don’t believe they will be spending any money on books.
Particularly when you consider they have spent $800,000 on the old Home hardware building and have just spent money on refurbishing an office within it! The Joint Use School Library is an obvious failure which ever way you look at it. There are no where near the amount of public books available, for instance the car books, there used to be more than 50 now there is 17 on the shelf and I doubt they are all out on loan.
Lets face it the Education department successfully managed to obtain rate payers money for a School owned building and cut their ongoing costs in half courtesy of the Council just like they did 100 years ago with the old high School site! They must be laughing their heads off at Colac down in spring street!
Meanwhile the Councillors talk about the Blue water Fitness Centre which can not be easily expanded to a proper 50 meter pool because the Joint use School Library car park and School bus stops are in the way, what a joke. Can we please get some Council candidates who would actually be prepared to stand up for this City instead of bowing to the Authority which is the State Government. Colac could be one of the best places to live in Victoria, we just need people who are not afraid to stand up and improve the place!
