I have just watched gaycrashers on ABC IView having missed the first run. Firstly .. I wish to congratulate the Mayor of Colac for supporting Joel and Rhys and speaking plainly and honestly. Triffic that the Mayor opened Joel and Rhys’ show at the RSL. Triffic that the RSL – provided a room for these two comedians. The response of youth worker was interesting. I will go back to IView and listen youthworker’s response again. I spent time in an isolated mallee town helping family run a small business. This was in the 80’s. Being a Melbourne based young woman I was a little bit taken a back by the cultural differences that I observed in town. Women, Indigenous people, Gays, City Slickers all copped a right royal flogging in casual conversations, jokes and drunken raves. It was an eye opener for me I have to say. Good people but some deeply conservative and unkind people as well. Of course these attitudes are found in all parts of our country and across the globe. No matter where these attitudes are on display it just feels brutally unkind and unfair.
How can the Colac community stand up against the idiots that caused the trouble if we dont know who they are! :-/
I honestly think that if Joel & Rhys had that much of a problem with a fed of the locals, they should of taken to the Police.
I grew up in colac and I can safely say that the documentary Gaycrashers is very true to my own experiences in colac. Ive heard many ignorant ‘jokes’ about gay friensa, Ive been yelled at, called a freak or weirdo, had stuff thrown at me and even physically attacked purely cause I dressed differently. What’s “disappointing” is your not standing up as a community and telling this group of offenders that it’s totally unacceptable. Instead your standing there blaming joel and rhys for talking about horrible discriminations that happend to them in our town.
