It’s pretty simple. Shell is Coles Express, owned by Australia’s largest retailer Wesfarmers. Owners are Australian shareholders, and Management is in Perth. Safeway owned by Australia’s largest Supermarket, owned by shareholders, management in Sydney. BP Australia’s 3 rd largest fuel retailer, otherwise known as British Petroleum, owners in London. We have one small independent who must buy his fuel from middle men usually at a price greater than the listed “shopper docket” price. Let’s get real about this problem, and stop talking about Colac retailers, there are not any Colac retailers, there are large multinational companies who run supermarkets who dominate fuel sales in Colac, and they don’t care if you buy your petrol and grocceries in Colac or Geelong. What is needed is the Colac community to start saying publicly that Coles and Safeway don’t care about country people, and that Coles and Safeway are ripping us off. Then just maybe their highly paid media promoters might try and mitigate some bad publicity!
I’m with John B, it would be great to hear from these petrol retailers what they believe their reasons are for charging the prices that they do? The Colac Herald certainly needs to speak to each of them and let the community know what they have to say. That would make interesting reading!
Has the Colac Herald ever tried to interview the owners of Colac’s service stations and asked the reasons behind their uncompetitive pricing?
