A JUNIOR Apollo Bay sailor has tackled the waters of Sydney Harbour and scored a bronze medal in a national youth sailing event.
Morgan Stewart, 16, finished third in the 2016 Australia Youth Laser Sailing Championships at Sydney last month.
The contest involved five days of racing with a field of around 50 competitors.
Stewart said the event was a “crazy” experience because she had to dodge other traffic in the harbour while competing.
“It was crazy, when you first head out, there’s ferries and sea planes and other boats everywhere,” she said.
“As someone who sails in Melbourne and on the coast of Victoria kind of area, it’s crazy just having to look out for everyone else.”
Morgan attends Apollo Bay P-12 College and trains regularly as a member of the Apollo Bay Sailing Club.
“We race every Saturday over summer, that forms part of the training,” she said.
“Then also during the week I try to get out on the water and practice fitness and strength and being in the boat I guess.”
Stewart said her success in Sydney had boosted her confidence in the sport and she was keen to continue sailing into the future.
“I’m definitely taking sailing as far as I can, even if it’s not a career, just to keep sailing and keep enjoying it,” she said.
