COLES hopes to open its new Colac supermarket in mid-2017, with developers set to begin construction “in the next couple of months”.
The supermarket giant has also indicated the new supermarket will have a “market-style” layout focusing on fresh produce.
A Coles spokeswoman told the Colac Herald the supermarket “is expected to be completed by mid-2017 and will create up to 200 construction and retail jobs in the Colac community”.
“The market-style supermarket will include the latest features such as a continental delicatessen, in-store bakery, in-store butcher and extensive fresh produce on ice,” the spokeswoman said.
The details come after developers Lascorp confirmed the site of the new complex at the eastern end of Bromfield Street in Colac “is being prepared for the start of construction”.
Lascorp national development manager Robert Harris said workers were demolishing three vacant houses as part of the site preparations.
Mr Harris said he predicted construction of the complex would take nine to 10 months.
“We are starting construction of the Coles supermarket hopefully in the next couple of months,” Mr Harris said.
“We are in the final stages of appointing a builder and they should be on site within the next few months.
“We’re really excited that we are going to give Colac a first-class facility with a state-of-the-art supermarket, easy access, plenty of carparking and specialty stores,” Mr Harris said.
Mr Harris said Lascorp had also been negotiating with prospective tenants for the four specialty stores in the complex.
