An idea to change Colac’s name to Lake Colac in an attempt to push for improvements at the natural asset has received a mixed response.
Passionate Colac Lake campaigner and Colac Otway Shire councillor Jason Schram made his idea to change Colac’s name public last week.
Cr Schram said his main objective behind the name-change idea was to spark a conversation about the lake and how to improve it.
He said that it was disappointing that media reports had missed the point, and resulted in “the negative response” from community members.
But Cr Schram said he was glad the reports had created a conversation.
He also clarified that the idea wasn’t a council position.
“I’ve found that no authority is willing to come up with a solution to improve the lake or to keep it at a level permanently so it can be used for recreational purposes,” Cr Schram said.
“It was floating an idea ‘do you think changing it to Lake Colac might make people stand up and take notice?’” he said.
“I think there’s no harm in that; if the response from people was positive then I could take it to council.
“If it was negative then yeah we can forget it, but it started the conversation about making a solution.”
