Golf squad aims high in 2018

Junior pennant golfers Lockie Mulgrew, Max Miraglia, Ryley Walker, Georgia Fish and Tom Hanson.

Colac will boast an identical pennant team to the squad that helped the club return to the format for the first time in almost two decades last year.

The South West Golf Association’s junior pennant competition starts this Sunday, with Colac taking on Curlewis at home.

Max Miraglia, Tom Hanson, Lockie Mulgrew, James McNabb, Georgia Fish and Ryley Walker will all feature in Colac’s squad for the second-straight year.

Colac just missed out on a finals berth in its first junior pennant campaign since the mid 1990s last year, registering three wins and two losses.

Team manager Paul Hanson said he expected the team to improve again in 2018 after promising signs from Colac’s up-and-coming golfers during the off-season.

Tom Hanson, Miraglia and Fish were part of the Barwon Sports Academy’s golf program, while also featuring in tournaments across the state including last month’s Victorian Open.

“We’ve got the same team playing as last year,” Paul Hanson said.

“Our kids’ handicaps have dropped a bit this year, I think Max and Tom were playing off about eight or nine, now Tom is down to five and I think Max is on seven, so they’ve improved a bit.

“Georgia is still on the same handicap, around six, while Riley has dropped a few shots and Locky has also improved a fair bit.”
