Otway Districts have landed a major early-season boost with former Torquay captain Troy Bird joining the football club.

Bird is set to make his debut for the Demons in tomorrow’s home match at Gellibrand against Alvie.

Otway co-coach Tom Mullane-Grant said Bird, a former leader and best-and-fairest winner at Bellarine league outfit Torquay, crossed to the Demons through his connections with assistant coach Shane Boyington.

“We were rapt,” he said of the club’s acquisition of Bird.

“He’s a firefighter with Shane Boyington and we talked to him late last year in the hope that he’d come across.

“He’s got three young kids, but being on the same crew as Boyo sort of helped and I think he’s going to be a really good player when we have him.”
