When you think of Birregurra legends, Dave McDonald is one of the first names that springs to mind.
The hard-at-it onballer was a key figure in the Saints’ decade of dominance from the mid-’80s, notching up more than 200 senior games.
He netted two best-and-fairest awards in premiership years, and was among just three players in the club’s history who had played in three flags, in 1985 against Alvie, ‘90 against South Colac, and ‘94 against Winchelsea.
Bernard Rourke and Tony Addinsall were the other three-time premiership players until last year, when modern-day heroes James Rowan, Mick Davis and Jack Moorfoot joined the list.
McDonald was 20 years old when Birregurra lifted the cup in ‘85, ending a 30-year premiership drought – his father Jack was part of the Saints’ 1955 flag.
