Harbour viability assessed

Colac Otway Shire Council will create a development plan to examine the restrictions and possible uses of the Apollo Bay Harbour.

Civic leaders are optimistic they’re making progress on a revamp of Apollo Bay’s harbour, after more than a decade in development limbo.

Colac Otway Shire Council is putting off the process of calling for expressions of interest from developers willing to invest in the harbour.

But the council will instead create a full development plan and business case for the harbour, to give potential developers an idea about what they would be allowed to do with the harbour, before starting an expressions of interest process later.

Council officers hope the new process will attract private and government investment to the harbour.

Development and community services general manager Gareth Smith said further work was necessary to make the project more enticing for the private sector.

“The council had previously decided to move to the EOI and tender process, however further advice from government and industry raised concerns that private interest would be very limited at present,” he said.
