English imports star in win over Irrewarra

Warrion’s English imports have led the Panthers to an upset win against last season’s runner-up Irrewarra in the opening round of Colac district cricket.

Barriball brothers Billy and Charlie both posted 30-plus runs and snared two wickets each to help last season’s wooden spoon winners to a thrilling one-wicket win which went down to the wire.

“We were pretty excited about it,” new Warrion captain Ben Hester said.

“We only won a couple of games last year, so to win the first game of the season against a side that was in the grand final is pretty big,” he said.

“We were going in as the underdog I suppose, we just played our game and it worked out, it got pretty close in the end.”

Warrion restricted Irrewarra to 149 in 42 overs on a fast outfield at Colac Secondary College, with the Barriballs, Xavier Prime, and Jordan Keast all taking two wickets each.

The Panthers had Irrewarra on the back foot early at 4-29, before Brent Hay, 24 runs, and Mark Jackson, 43, revived the Redbacks’ innings.

“We had a pretty good start with the ball, but then they made a few runs to get back into it,” Hester said.
