Colac basketball officials are confident the association’s depth will cover a mass exodus of players from last season’s Country Basketball League men’s championship side.
The Kookas have lost nine players from last year’s side which defeated Mount Gambier in the grand final, with All Star guard Lewie Varley and centre Jacob Pupavac headlining the list.
Varley has spent the past four seasons with Colac, and played key roles in the Kookas’ 2015 and 2018 championship sides, earning best-on-court honours in both grand final wins.
Colac team manager Peter Lemke said the Kookas’ high-profile recruits Nathan Lemke and Jordan Lingard would help cover the loss of Pupavac and fellow talls Jesse Burn, who has joined CBL newcomer Bellarine, and young gun Darcy Howard, season off.
“It’s a new-look side this season and it’s a young side which is exciting,” he said.
“That’s part of the reason why we brought in Peter Withers as our new coach, he’s got a lot of experience developing junior players over the past 20 years.
