Basketball legend to help lead Colac netballers

Colac Tigers netball officials have appointed local basketball legend Steve Lawrence as co-coach of the club’s A Grade side alongside star player Georgie Finn for the 2019 season, while fellow player Gabi Rieniets is set to take on an assistant coaching role.

Local basketball legend Steve Lawrence says he doesn’t have to look far for inspiration as he prepares to tackle Colac’s toughest job in netball.

Lawrence has become the latest male mentor to take on a netball leadership role after Colac Tigers officials approached the champion hoopster to co-coach their A Grade alongside young star Georgie Finn.

Lawrence said he took confidence from the success of male coach Pat Duynhoven, who led Simpson to its maiden A Grade premiership in Colac district netball during his first year as coach in 2018.

Both Lawrence’s daughter Annalie and Duynhoven’s daughter Eliza are going through the pathway ranks together, and Lawrence said he would turn to Duynhoven for advice.

“Our daughters travel together down to Melbourne for netball,” he said.
