The Colac District Football Netball League has given the green light to Simpson’s Anzac Day night match proposal, with the Tigers set to take on Birregurra.
Simpson club president Mick Royal said the Saints had jumped on board for the initiative, which would include a full complement of football and netball matches under lights on Anzac Day next year.
Mr Royal said the club was yet to lock in a venue.
“I had a quick word to (Birregurra’s) Dave Drayton at the delegates’ meeting, he took it back to their club and they were all over it,” he said.
“The league’s ticked it off, now we’ve got to make sure we’ve got a ground available and search for sponsors and make it a cracking day.”
Mr Royal said he hoped to lock in the Saints for two years, with Anzac Day falling on the weekend in 2020 and 2021.
He said he hoped to make the day “as significant as possible for Anzac Day”.
“We’ll try and get the clubs involved in the march in Colac, and we’ll contact the RSL and get them involved for the minute’s silence and Last Post,” he said.
“We want to make it as big as possible, we’ve got a lot of time to plan it now.”
