Third-year Tiger named captain

The Colac Tigers have announced that former Birregurra skipper Jack Melican, third from left, will captain the Tigers in just his third year in the Geelong Football League. It’s taken just three seasons with the Colac Tigers for young defender Jack Melican to earn the role of senior football captain.

The Tigers announced Melican, 24, would head a young leadership group set to lead the club during the 2019 Geelong Football League season.

New vice-captain and former AFL footballer Tom Simpkin, 28, is the most-experienced player in the group, that also includes his younger brother Lachie Simpkin, Adam Garner, Tyler Murnane and Luke Hillman, all in their early 20s.

Colac co-coach Kane Leersen said Melican, who was in the leadership group last season, was a deserving player to take the reins from veteran ruckman Lochie Veale.

Melican crossed to the Colac Tigers after leading Birregurra to a Colac district league premiership as captain in 2016 at just 22 years of age.

“It’s a great honour for Jack, and well deserved,” Leersen said.

“It’s been a natural development for him, he leads from the front on the field, he drives a high standard, his voice and communication is second to none,” he said.
