Otways trail pioneer to relocate to Chile

Old Beechy Rail Trail committee member Tony Grogan and his wife Irena are moving to Chile.

The Old Beechy Rail Trail is losing one of its stalwarts in Tony Grogan.

Mr Grogan is retiring to Chile with his wife Irena, a former Chilean resident, where their daughter and son-in-law live.

He was vital in helping establish the Old Beechy Rail Trail and was chairman of the trail’s committee during its first 10 years.

“My main interest was to develop a walking trail, so that people could get out and enjoy exercise in a natural environment and enjoy the beauties of the Otways bushlands,” Mr Grogan said.

He said the Old Beechy Rail Trail environment had a beautiful variety in scenery and that a range of locals and tourists accessed the trail.

“The caravan park has had enormous benefits from the rail trail, in that people stay there overnight, do a walk from Beech Forest to Gellibrand on one day and then from Gellibrand to Barongarook the second day.

Cyclists can do the whole trip in one day.

Lots of school groups and youth groups come to walk.”
