Swan wins flag in AFL London league

Alvie footballer Aidan Spence has become the latest Colac district export to win a flag in London’s AFL competition with the Shepherds Bush Raiders.

Alvie footballer Aidan Spence has continued a Colac district legacy of winning premierships with the Shepherds Bush Raiders in London’s AFL competition.

Spence helped the West London Wildcats’ second-division team Raiders to a grand final victory in the AFL London league.

The 27-year-old followed in the footsteps of a host of Colac district footballers who have won flags with the Raiders; including Sam Cardinal, Josh Black, Al Adams, Jake McGuane, Dan Jeffreys, David Dunne, Trent Dunlop, Dan Cannon and Rhys Alexander.

Spence spoke to the Colac Herald about the weekend’s win before jetting off for a footy trip on the Greek Islands to celebrate.

He said the Raiders entered the clash in form after upstaging minor premiers Wandsworth Demons in the first final.

The Raiders defeated the Wimbledon Hawks in the decider, 69-43.

“It was a tough game, they wouldn’t go away all day but we managed to have a big enough gap on the scoreboard,” Spence said.

“It’s a bit different here, I play for the Wildcats but I’m in the twos and we call ourselves the Shepherds Bush Raiders,” he said.

“The standard isn’t too bad but the ones would beat us by a lot.

“There are some very good footballers playing for the Wildcats; a few blokes that have played VFL, SANFL, WAFL, etc.”

Spence said the league hosted games all over London, with the Wildcats playing home games at Chiswick in West London.
