Otway shares similarities with last grand final side

Otway Districts’ only A Grade premiership netball coach Kath Lowen says there are striking similarities between this year’s Demons and her grand final-winning side of 1996.

Lowen led Otway Districts, then known as the Kangaroos, to a shock win in the Heytesbury Mount Noorat league 23 years ago, against a Kolora side which hadn’t been beaten in two-and-a-half years.

This year’s Demons will also face an unbeaten side on the big stage in Alvie.

Lowen said that, like this year’s Otway Districts team, the Kangaroos were made up of talented homegrown netballers, including Brenda Perkins, the mother of current Demon Brooke Hawkins.

“Brenda was brilliant, she was the league best-and-fairest that year,” she said.

“Nicole Mahoney was a good goalie, and the youngest girl was Linda Perkins, she was only 17 at the time.”
