Steven got his wish of being traded to the Cats this week following 12 seasons with St Kilda, where he established himself as one of the greats of the club with four best-and-fairest awards.

The Cats sent pick 58 to the Saints for Steven during the final day of the AFL’s trade period yesterday.

Speaking to the media today, Steven said he was excited to start life as a Cat.

“I’m just super excited really,” he said.

“I’ve wanted to come down for a couple of years now so I’m really excited, and just happy to be home.”|

Steven, a father to daughter Maggie, played just seven games this year, requiring a break from the game during his mental health issues.

But he said he was confident being closer to his his family, including parents Jenny and Peter and younger brothers Ted and George,
would allow him to get back to a “happy and healthy state”.

“Mum and Dad were over the moon, and I’ve got a couple of brothers floating around, so it’s going to be a good couple of years,” Steven

“(Being around family) will just make me more comfortable and, obviously with a young family, having my own family around will help,” he

“I’ll be able to get fit again, get happy, get healthy, and that’s what I’m aiming to do.”

Steven sent a heartfelt message to St Kilda fans on the Saints’ social media page following yesterday’s trade.

He said he was sad to leave but “it’s time for me to head back home and look after myself and my family”.

Steven signed off by saying “if anyone’s feeling down, just speak up, that’s the best way to do it”.
