New Otway Districts co-coach Alex Burnett says he hopes he can trump his dad and Colac district football great Ricky’s record during his time leading the club.
The late Ricky Burnett coached Otway for one season in 1993 after crossing to the club following a successful stint at Colac Imperials, where he led the Cats to two premierships in 1986 and ’89 and played in another in ‘91.
He won the best-and-fairest at the Gellibrand-based club in ‘93, which Alex also managed at the Demons in 2018.
But Ricky’s coaching record at Otway wasn’t as fruitful.
“Dad coached out here,” Alex said.
“He was only here for the year; he won the best-and-fairest and then they went into recession for a year.
“I’m pretty sure they didn’t win a game so hopefully I can do a bit better.”
Exciting midfielder Alex Burnett was appointed to lead the Demons alongside Ben Allan for the 2020 season.
Burnett joined the club in 2015 and has notched up 61 games without featuring in finals.
He said a desire to help the club break a 13-year finals drought had spurred him on ahead of his debut coaching gig.
“I’ve stuck around because it’s a great club and I want to see success,” Burnett said.
