Former Colac district footballer Jack Berry has been part of one of the most talked about matches in the country, coming up against AFL legend Cyril Rioli in his highly anticipated return to football.
Berry is spending the summer playing in the Northern Territory Football League with the Palmerston Magpies, who went head to head with Rioli’s Tiwi Bombers on Saturday.
The Premier League match made headlines across Australia after Rioli kicked the game-winning goal in the dying seconds to lead the Bombers to a thrilling 11.13 (79) to 12.6 (78) win over the Pies.
The Bombers’ win was Rioli’s first game since early 2018, when he announced his shock retirement from the AFL following 189 games, four premierships and the 2015 Norm Smith Medal with Hawthorn.
The NTFL match included some big names in Australian football, including Tiwi Bombers’ Austin Wonaeamirri and Magpies’ Aaron
Alwyn Davey also plays for Palmerston.
Berry has notched up three games for the winless Magpies, following an invitation to join the club this summer.
The 23-year-old ruckman spent the winter season with VFL club Werribee and Geelong Football League club Leopold.
