Gruelling dirt roads and constant breakdowns couldn’t stop two Birregurra mates from navigating the length of the country to raise money for cancer research.
Bruce Bethune and Pat Davis competed as the “Country Boys” in last month’s Sh**box Rally, in which participants drove from Melbourne to Townsville in seven days in cars worth less than $1000 to raise money for the Cancer Council.
The pair of petrolheads collected more than $20,000 for the charity, thanks to donations from friends, family and local businesses.
Although Bruce conceded spending up to 600 kilometres a day driving on dirt roads was “pretty full-on”, he said the rally was a rewarding experience and helped drought-ravaged communities in Australia’s centre.
“One place we stopped at they normally sell about 6000 litres of fuel a year and we did nine and a half thousand in one day,” he said.
“That was probably the best part of it, seeing the people’s faces light up.
