Fire Backup

Colac volunteer firefighters Kelvin Blake and Jason Clarke were among a strike team which spent the weekend at Corryong defending the township from bushfires. Four CFA Colac brigade firefighters were part of the team, which returned this week.

A strike team of Colac firefighters received a hero’s welcome at Corryong this weekend, when they travelled to assist the threatened community battle blazes raging in north-east Victoria.

Colac CFA volunteers Kelvin Blake, Andrew Bath, Jason Clarke and Paul Hunton travelled with the brigade’s pumper tanker to Corryong about 5am Friday morning ahead of dangerous bushfire weather predicted for the
weekend.

Mr Blake said the Corryong community was in good spirits despite the ongoing fire threat.

“They were appreciative, they came over tooting their horns, flashing their high beams and waving at us as we were coming in,” he said.

“We had a few public people come up and shake our hand as we were standing out the front, just to say thanks and keep walking.”
