What is your position/role?

Apprentice Master

How long have you been with AKD?

Seven years – four years as a Fitter and the last three years as Apprentice Master

What does a typical day at work involve for you?

A typical day for me involves supervising and mentoring AKD Colac’s maintenance apprentices, through coordinating tasks and activities that align with their TAFE training plans, enhancing their trade skills and knowledge.

I also look after our workshop and supplies, support development planning for all maintenance employees and ensure all maintenance safe work and isolation procedures are up to date.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

Working with the apprentices and watching their progress and growth as they gain knowledge and skills in their chosen trade.

Can you share a memorable experience or accomplishment during your time with AKD?

Memorable moments for me are when I can see a sense of achievement in the faces of our apprentices as they learn a new skill set and when we can make a positive change to a young person’s life and career by helping them complete their trade qualification.

What do you think makes AKD a great place to work?

AKD provides encouragement and support, both personally and professionally, the opportunity to learn and built not just a job but a career. The focus and priority given to Health, Safety and Wellbeing of AKD’s employees is a key standout for me.

What opportunities for growth and development are available at AKD?

Opportunities are endless. We have seen employees go from production workers to trades people, supervisors, even managers.

How would you like to grow in your role?

I would like to grow in my role by continually developing and improving our apprentice program, workshop, and equipment. This includes keeping more technically challenging work in-house and placing a greater focus on higher education and career pathways for maintenance employees.

For anyone considering a role at AKD, my advice is to definitely go for it. AKD offers multiple opportunities and pathways for a successful and safe career throughout AKD.
