Extreme fire conditions today

Colac and district is bracing for a day of “well above average” temperatures today, with a Total Fire Ban Day declared for south-west Victoria.

Total Fire Ban Days mean no fire can be lit in the open air or allowed to remain alight between 12.01am and 11.59pm.

An extreme fire danger rating has also been forecast for the region, a rating that urges residents to “take action now to protect your life and property”.

CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan encouraged the community to have more than one source of information today.

“Today’s conditions will make it difficult for firefighters to supress a fire should one start,” Jason said.

“We’re asking people to follow the strict conditions associated with the Total Fire Ban declaration.

“Understand how the increased fire risk will impact you, and ensure your fire plan covers all possible contingencies.”

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, temperatures will soar to “well above average” maximums across the state.

Colac is tipped to reach 38 degrees, with winds peaking at 45 kilometres per hour.
