Total loss at Winchelsea house fire

LOST: A fire gutted a Winchelsea home on the weekend, with a fundraiser launched for the family.

Emergency service crews have battled a Winchelsea house fire which destroyed the home.

The fire took hold about 10am on Saturday, with multiple crews on scene.

VicEmergency issued a warning to people nearby that they might see or smell smoke, with the blaze forcing the temporary closure of the Princes Highway Colac-bound.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson confirmed that no emergency treatment or transport was required.

Winchelsea Fire Brigade took to social media to acknowledge the efforts of first responders.

“(With) the severity of the blaze, fuelled by the summer heat and the size of the residence, a request was called early for support from surrounding brigades.

“Sadly, the occupants suffered a total loss, a harsh reality that weighs heavily on all first responders.

“Beyond the physical demands of firefighting, it’s incredibly difficult knowing individuals have lost their home and possessions.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the affected family, and had raised more than $5000 when the Herald went to print.
