Finch eyes fairytale finish
Champion Colac district product Aaron Finch has spoken about his desire to retire from international cricket after Australia’s 2023 World Cup campaign in India. The current Australian limited overs captain was on Melbourne radio this morning as he prepares to head to England for six one-day and Twenty20 matches next month. Finch captained Australia to a semi-final at last year’s ODI World Cup and reached the ultimate goal on home soil in 2015 when was part of a team which claimed the tournament. The 33-year-old said returning Australia to the top of 50-over cricket would be a fairytale finish to his international playing days, a goal he has thought about after not playing cricket since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. “My end date at this stage is the World Cup final of the 2023 World Cup in India,” Finch told SEN’s Whateley. “That’s my goal and I’m sticking to it,” he said. “That’s what I had my mind set on a fair way out, but I think this period has just confirmed it. “That will see me through to 36, obviously with form and injury permitting.”

Swans secure a win through local racehorse
Two Alvie footballers have enjoyed a win this year through a local racehorse. Angus Lloyd and Angus Uwland have shares in owner-trainer David “Butch” Londregan’s horse Zoffany Rocket, who crossed the line first at Colerain on Sunday. The Swans duo joined Londregan’s stables after putting in a bid at Alvie’s fundraising auction last December. The gelding secured victory for the first time under Cororooke’s Londregan, who said he was gearing the six-year-old up for his first competitive jumps race this weekend. “The horse has always shown plenty and he’s ran into some heavy tracks of late, but did well on top of the ground on Sunday,” he said. “He’s had a couple of hurdle trials and he’s really sharpening up, so we’ll probably step out next Sunday at Ballarat and that’ll be his hurdle debut.” Londregan said he was thrilled Alvie footballers joined his small operation after he followed the Swans closely before coronavirus put football on hold. The Colac-based trainer said he was hopeful they could attend Warrnambool’s annual jumps carnival next year to watch Zoffany Rocket race live. “A couple of the boys have a share in him,” Londregan said. “They’re having a bit of fun with him, so hopefully we can get another good result for them this Sunday. “I normally go out to Alvie and watch the footy and have a few beers with the guys out there and they were pretty keen to put some shares in. “They’re obviously not allowed to go to the races, but hopefully next year it opens up for the boys and we’re planning for the May carnival in Warrnambool.” Londregan, who normally heads to South Australia at this time of year for jumps races, said he was likely to spell both Zoffany Rocket and Hierachal in the coming weeks in a bid to give them solid preparation for 2021. Meanwhile, Colac jockey Ryan Maloney has enjoyed solid form in Queensland. The 35-year-old rode Pizonie to victory at Eagle Farm on Saturday, a week after he had three winners in the one meet at Doomben.
