Grass fire threatens three properties

Police blocked the Princes Highway near Collins Road, east of Colac, while fire crews battled a fire at Irrewarra. The fire started on the roadside and threatened nearby homes.

POLICE are yet to determine the cause of a grass fire which threatened three properties east of Colac.

  1. I second that plea, Jo. One thoughtless action could have had devastating results. I’ve previously reported a car throwing a cigarette butt out of the window on a 35+ day in bushland. You seriously have to question their mentality. I mentioned it to a young co-worker at the time. His response “But where else are you meant to put the butts” ???????? I have no doubt that out the window is where his usually went too. Hopefully after my ‘discussion’ with him on the possible impacts of his actions, they no longer do and he is a little more responsible. I live further up the road from where this particular fire occurred but fire travels quickly. Good work by all involved in extinguishing it so promptly. It could have had horrendous circumstances otherwise.

  2. And the chances are it was a cigarette some idiot threw out of their car window. We came through just after the road was unblocked and couldn’t believe how close it had come to houses.
    You have an ashtray in your car, people. DAMN WELL USE IT!!
