Relief for Birregurra after star is cleared

Birregurra’s Andrew Kelly was cleared of a kicking charge by a tribunal on Friday.

Birregurra coach Ben Boseley says the club breathed a sigh of relief for gun footballer Andrew Kelly when a tribunal cleared him of a kicking charge.

An AFL Barwon tribunal found insufficient evidence on Friday night that the high-profile Saints recruit kicked Otway Districts footballer Dean Jenkins in round 10.

The Gellibrand-based Demons requested an investigation into the incident, which sidelined Jenkins for the remainder of the season after he broke a leg.

CDFL chairman Peter Mulheron said a three-hour hearing took place in Colac, with Kelly cleared and free to play the remainder of the season.

“It was a very thorough hearing by the tribunal,” he said.

“At the end of the day, the tribunal thought they couldn’t sustain the charges of kicking.

“There was definitely contact made and Andrew accepted that part of it, but no one saw any contact.”
