Junior set to hit ton with record in sight

Irrewarra-Beeac under-15 footballer Josh Sanders is 11 goals off triple figures ahead of the Bombers’ round 11 clash with Otway Districts.

Irrewarra-Beeac’s Josh Sanders is on track to become just the fourth junior footballer in Colac district league history to reach triple figures this weekend, and could smash the record by 50 goals.

The young tall has kicked 89 goals in 10 games for the Bombers’ under-15 side in 2019, needing just 11 goals against Otway Districts on Saturday to reach the major milestone.

Sanders kicked 14 goals against the Demons when the teams met in round two.

The Colac Herald understands Otway Districts footballer Michael Gray holds the record for most goals for a season in Colac district junior football, when he booted 104 majors for the Demons’ under-17.5 side in 2012. Irrewarra-Beeac under-16 footballer Mario Demasi also brought up the ton in 1987.

Sanders has already reached triple figures in 2019 if you include the 15 goals he’s kicked in four games filling in for Irrewarra-Beeac’s under-18 team.

But Irrewarra-Beeac under-15 coach Peter Morrissy said the Bombers were more likely to acknowledge the feat in the one age group.

“We didn’t even talk about it on the weekend, but it would be great for our league to see a young fella get an opportunity to kick 100 goals,” he said.

“There are some good players running around in the 15s, but it’s certainly a team effort to do what Josh is achieving.”
