Interest in Australia Day celebrations in Colac Otway Shire seems to have evaporated.
A plan to have a community committee help choose the winners of Colac Otway’s Australia Day awards has failed, with nobody willing to sign up.
The news follows revelations earlier this year that no towns or community groups wanted to host Colac Otway’s 2019 Australia Day activities.
Colac Otway Shire councillors voted earlier this year to invite community members to nominate to join an Australia Day Advisory Committee, which would help choose the winners of Australia Day awards and ensure celebrations reflected community expectations.
But nobody responded to a call-out for people to nominate for the five-person committee.
Councillors last week resolved to abandon the plan and revert to a previous system, with council officers reviewing nominations, and councillors making the final decision on awards.
Cr Stephen Hart took the opportunity at last week’s council meeting to suggest that the council should seek community views on the future of Australia Day celebrations.
“It’s time for Colac Otway council to provide an opportunity to the community to participate in an open discussion about what their expectations are of council with regards to the celebration of Australia Day within our shire,” Cr Hart said.
